Featured images

Want to highlight your visual content? Consider adding a featured image to your posts (using the “standard” post format), and pages. Featured images appear above the content on the blog index and on single pages.

Connect to social networks

Poly allows you to add links to your Twitter and Facebook accounts in the theme’s header. First, connect these services to Publicize, by going to Settings → Sharing. Once connected, navigate to the Customizer, where you will find a new Connect panel. Select the account(s) you want to link to, and their respective icons will be displayed:

Custom menus, header, and background

Poly allows you to have a custom menu in the theme’s header. It can be setp up by going to Appearance → Menus.

It also lets you choose a custom header image. Simply go to Appearance → Header and set your new header.

And finally, you can easily apply a background color or image by going to Appearance → Background.

Theme options

Poly comes packed with multiple theme options available via the Customizer:

  • Full-page background image: allow your background image to cover the whole page and stay fixed.
  • Search form: display a search form in the theme’s header.
  • Post author: display the author’s name underneath each post.
  • Sidebar position: you can choose to display the sidebar either on the left or on right (default).

Quick Specs (all measurements in pixels)

  1. The main column width is 580 except in the full-width layout where it’s 900.
  2. The sidebar width is 260.
  3. A widget area in the footer is 300.

Featured images

Poly supports featured images on pages and posts using the “standard” post format.

Open the editor of the post or page where you want to display a unique custom header image, and locate the Featured Image module in the bottom right corner under Page Attributes. Click Choose a Featured Image.

If you don’t see the Featured Image module on your Add New or Edit Post page, please make sure you’ve selected Featured Image in your Screen Options.

You will see an upload screen identical to that used when inserting an image into a blog post. Follow the on-screen prompts to choose the image from your computer and upload it or choose it from one of the images already in your media library.

Once the image has successfully been uploaded, you’ll see one or more images displayed as thumbnails. Click on the one you want to use as a featured image. It will then appear outlined in blue with a checkmark. If desired, you can add a caption and alt text under the Attachment Details area (optional).

Next, click the button Set Featured Image:

Don’t forget to click Update on your post/page to save your changes. Your featured image is now set!


Connect to your social networks

If you take a look at the demo site, you will see Twitter and Facebook icons in the header linking to our profile on Twitter and Facebook. To set this up for your own site, first connect these services to Publicize by going to Settings → Sharing. Once connected, navigate to the Customizer, where you’ll find a new Connect panel. Select the account(s) you want to link to, and their respective icons will appear.

Custom menu

Configure a Custom Menu that will display in the header of your site by going to Appearance → Menus and assigning it to the primary menu area. This menu will display your pages if no custom menu is set.

Add a Custom Header Image to your site by going to Appearance → Header.

First, upload a new image or choose one from your media library. Once uploaded, you will have the opportunity to crop the image and set a few more options.

Note: Poly works best with custom header images that are 940 pixels wide and 100 pixels high.


Full-page background image

If you want your background image to cover the whole page and stay fixed, go to Customizer → Theme Options and tick “Full Page Background Image” and don’t forget to “Save.”


Search form

If you take a look at the demo site, you will see a search button in the top right of the header. To set this up for your own site, visit the Customizer and click on “Theme Options”. Tick the checkbox next to “Search Form” and click “Save.”


Post author

By default, Poly will not display the author’s name. If you want to display it, navigate to the Customizer → Theme Options. Tick the checkbox next to “Post Author” and click “Save”.


Sidebar position options

You can choose to position your sidebar on either the right (default) or the left. Simply go to Customizer → Theme Options.
