Opti is a blog theme for WordPress, that has magazine elements. We wanted to make something that was somewhere between a blog and a magazine allowing bloggers to create intricate attractive sites that show off their content. Opti makes your content shine.

Featured Content

At the top of the homepage is a featured content space. This highlights your most recent post bringing attention to your latest content.

Homepage Categories

To the left of the homepage there are some optional homepage categories. These let you give your visitors a taster of the content on your website, and allow you to direct the content as you want. In the theme control panel you can edit some settings related to the homepage categories. Specifically you can disable them if you don’t want them to display. You can select which categories display in this space, and you can choose how many posts are displayed with each category. All of these things give you the ability to make your homepage look the way you want!

On the blog posts we have added a custom related posts space. This selects related posts based upon the current blog posts category and is designed to encourage your visitors to travel around your blog finding new content. Of course, if you don’t like it then there’s an option to disable this in the theme settings.

Featured Content

Opti includes support for Featured Content – allowing you to control what content appears in the top box on the homepage of the site. The 4 most recent posts tagged as featured content will be displayed in a slider on the homepage. To enable the slider simply select the post tag you want to use and enter it on the “Appearance → Customize → Featured Content” page in the Featured Content area. Then, just tag up the posts you want to be flagged as special and Opti will add them in automatically.

Custom Sidebars

Opti uses a series of custom sidebars to allow you to keep things nice and flexible.

  • Sidebar Widgets – a right hand sidebar. If there are no widgets to display then the sidebar will be hidden and the content will stretch to full width.
  • Footer Widgets (x4) – widgets to display in the footer of the site. These widgets will hide if they are left empty.

Custom Templates

Opti includes some custom page templates. These give you some additional functionality that you wouldn’t get with a normal theme.

  • Archives – A chronological list of all posts published on your blog.
  • Full Width Page – A normal WordPress page, only it has the sidebars removed so that you can have content that stretches the full width of the site.

Quick Specs (all measurements in pixels):

  1. At full width the main column width is 701 except in the full-width layout where it’s 916.
  2. The sidebar width is 276.
  3. The logo is a square shape and is created from an image sized 120px wide by 120px tall.
  4. Please keep in mind that this theme is responsive, which means that it changes size as the browser is resized.
  5. The featured post thumbnails (on the homepage) are 345 pixels wide by 210 pixels high.
  6. The smaller post thumbnails are 105 pixels wide by 85 pixels high.
  7. The category archive thumbnail images are 120 pixels square.
  8. All featured Images are generated from the same initial image so make sure to keep the focus of the image in the center as the surrounding content may be cropped.

Custom Header

Opti makes use of WordPress custom header functionality.

Custom Menus

Opti has two custom menu areas available. If there is no custom menu configured then the menu will display a list of your site’s pages.

By default the menu under the header lists your website categories listed by number of posts in the category – however you can change this using the WordPress custom menu functionality. To keep things looking nice the menus are restricted to 7 items by default.

To find out more about how to set up your menus, see the Custom Menu documentation.

Featured Images

Opti supports thumbnail images on blog posts. These are known as Featured Images. To use featured images, edit the post you want to add the featured image to — and then find the box labelled ‘Featured Image’. Click the link titled ‘Set featured image’ and then either select the image or upload a new one using the options provided. Once selected, press ‘Set featured image’. Then click the ‘update’ button to save changes to your post.

On the homepage and archive pages the Opti featured images are scaled to XXX x YYY.

Featured Content

Opti uses the WordPress integrated featured content. This involves choosing a post tag that signifies that your posts are special. When this tag is used the posts will be displayed at the top of the homepage – separate to the regular blog posts. You can set the featured tag in “Appearance → Customize → Featured Content”.

To setup the Featured Content do the following:

  1. Go to the following meu. Appearance → Customize → Featured Content.
  2. Enter a tag name for the featured posts – make sure it’s unique and isn’t used anywhere else
  3. Edit the posts that you want to display in the featured content space and give them the featured tag you have just selected.
