Traction is a super-clean magazine theme featuring an easy-to-use featured post slider, built-in post thumbnail support, three available color schemes, support for a custom logo, handcrafted subscribe icons, and three custom page templates.

Elegant and professional, it is perfect for a news, business, tech, or magazine site—with its dark, modern look it is also well-suited for a personal journal or blog.

Featured Post Slider

Showcase top posts on your front page by enabling the featured post slider in Appearance → Themes. Options for the slider display include autostart, start delay, slide animation speed, and fade speed.

To add a post to the slider, simply mark it as “Sticky” in the post’s “Visibility” settings. Add interest to your featured posts by uploading an image as Featured Image to the post. The image will be displayed in two sizes: a small version (30 pixels by 30 pixels) in the featured slider’s navigation sidebar and a larger version (602 pixels by 200 pixels) in the post currently displayed in the slider’s main area.

Post Thumbnails

Traction makes great use of the WordPress post thumbnails, meaning the image you add to a post or page as its “Featured Image.” (Learn more about featured images.)

Three sizes of post thumbnails are used in the theme: a medium-sized version (175 pixels by 150 pixels) will be displayed at the top of your posts in index, archive, search, and single pages. The other two sizes are used with the featured post slider: small (30 pixels by 30 pixels) and large (602 pixels by 200 pixels).

Theme Options: Logo, Color Scheme, and Subscribe Links

Traction’s Theme Options menu gives you the flexibility to make all kind of design changes to your theme. With the click of a button you can easily customize your colors, add your logo, and more. To set up the options, head over to Appearance → Theme Options.

Easily add your own custom logo to the header using the built-in uploader, and hide or show your site tagline. Enable the “Subscribe” links for RSS, subscribe by email, Flickr, Twitter, and Facebook, and Traction will display the links with nifty handcrafted follow icons in your site header. Choose from three unique color schemes: blue (default), red, or green.

Custom Page Templates

Traction includes three different page templates to further customize your site. The sitemap page template allows your visitors to quickly find all your site content at one glance, the archives page template is great for organizing all of your content by date or category, and the full-width page template allows you more space by hiding the sidebar.

Quick Specs (all measurements in pixels):

  1. The main column width is 618 except in the full-width layout where it's 920.
  2. Featured images sizes are 602 by 200 for large image in featured slider, 175 by 150 for normal post thumbnail, and 30 by 30 for small navigational thumbnail in featured slider.

Using the featured slider

The featured slider is super simple to use once you get the hang of it. Below are some guidelines to help you get the slider setup and looking good.

  • Posts are added to the slider when they are marked “sticky”. When you mark a post “sticky” it will automatically appear in the slider.
  • The description on the button in the sidebar of the slider (underneath the title) is pulled from the post excerpt. We recommend keeping it short and sweet. If you don’t see a post excerpt option in your editor be sure to enable it through the “Screen Options” dropdown in the top right.
  • Next, be sure to add a “read more” tag to your post so your entire post doesn’t show up in the feature box.
  • Finally, add a featured image to your post.
  • Once your posts are properly formatted feel free to play around with the autostart and animation speed settings and get everything just right.

Adding a custom logo

Navigate to Appearance → Theme Options → Custom Logo Image and upload your logo. You also have the option to disable the tagline.

Changing your color scheme

Navigate to Appearance → Theme Options → Color Scheme and choose from blue (default), red, or green.
