Skylark

Skylark Theme

Skylark is a bright, clean, and responsive theme that’s a great starting point for individuals and businesses who want to establish a professional online presence. Not only is it well-suited for general blogging, but its showcase and portfolio page templates make it easy to highlight latest news and projects in style.

Showcase page template

Upon activation, Skylark displays your posts in a traditional blog format on the front page, but if you’d like to highlight your content professionally, then you can use the Showcase page template.

To use the Showcase page template, create or edit a page, and select “Showcase Template” from the Page Attributes module. If you’d like use the Showcase page template on your front page (like the Skylark demo site), go to Settings → Reading, and set the Front page option to Static Page. Select the page you just assigned the Showcase page template to as your front page and then choose another page to serve as your blog page.

The Showcase page template contains several special features: a featured slider for sticky posts, a customizable introductory message, and featured categories. Read on to learn more.

The Showcase page template offers a featured slider for sticky posts. If you’d like a post to appear in the slider, mark it as sticky and assign it a featured image that’s at least 500 pixels wide.

Introductory message

Why not introduce yourself and your work to your visitors? The introductory message appears just below the slider. Customize the message by going to Appearance → Theme Options.

As the final element on the Showcase page template, featured categories appear below the introduction, arranged in alphabetical order by category name. Skylark displays the four latest posts from each featured category. Choose a primary featured category in Appearance → Theme Options. To feature additional categories, go to Posts → Categories and assign your primary category as the “Category parent” of each additional category you wish to feature.

Post formats and Portfolio page template

Want to create a post with just an image? How about a gallery, or a video? The WordPress post formats feature is perfect for those cases. When you create a post with the image, gallery, or video post format, Skylark will display it as full-width on the single view, allowing more room for your content to shine. Furthermore, you can view up to 24 of your image, gallery, and video posts in a simple grid layout on the Portfolio page template.

Porfolio Template

To activate the Portfolio page template, refer to the instructions given above for using the Showcase page template. The only difference is that you’ll select the “Portfolio Template” from the the page attributes module.

To add a post to the Portfolio page template, create or edit a post with the image, video, or gallery post format, and assign it featured image that’s at least 280 pixels wide.
